How did your playgroup originally get started? Are these moms that are all in your immediate neighborhood?

No, though Springfield is a really small town, so in big city terms, everybody's in our immmediate neighbourhood! We met through the lactation group at St John's hospital. When I first moved to town, I was desperate to start making friends, especially those with babies of a similar age to Kellan. We'd just moved from Britain, didn't know anybody, didn't know the area, and wanted to start settling in. I do this best by making social connections. So I went to the La Leche League meeting and there was told about the St Johns group. That's where I met these wonderful moms and babies. Once our little guys had outgrown that "baby" group, we started a playgroup of our own.

We'll be making an out-of-state move soon, so I'm going to be in that same position too where I won't have any ready-made friends. I'm going to be joining lots of mommy-type groups and getting out and about where families tend to take their kids, and hope that I make some friends that way for myself and the kids. I'm not the type of person that needs lots of good friends, but I do need to have a few.

Leaving CA? Where are you off to?

We've been wanting to move out-of-state for some time now, but the timing was never right until now. We just can't afford the real estate around here which easily runs up to over $800,000+ for a very tiny house with no backyard! It's just outrageous!

Vince just accepted a job in Portland, OR! He'll be going there mid-May, and I'll be staying behind so that Devin can finish out the school year here. We'll all be officially moving at the end of June.

I just gave my notice this week, and my last day of work will be Friday, June 3. It was the strangest feeling considering that I've been with the same company for 15 years. I felt so discombobulated by the end of the day.

Good luck, Betty! I understand the need to leave CA. Its one of the big reasons that I've never been able to return. Just can't afford it! Hope that you settle quickly in Portland. I actually know loads of people who've moved from CA to OR or WA. Just makes sense. We officially own our house on your last day of work. Its really cute (I'll post a photo soon) and in a great neighbourhood. It cost us (you won't believe this) $88,000! Not exactly CA is it?!

Oh my! My jaw just drops whenever I see how affordable real estate is elsewhere in the country. Now if you added a zero after that, and made it $880,000, that would be a typical price out here!

My BIL and his wife are also thinking about leaving the state for the same reasons that we are. For them, they're just in the exploration stage now, and it'll probably take them a year or 2 before they figure out where they want to go. So far, they've expressed an interest in checking out Denver, CO. They're not ruling out Portland, but it's not first on their list.
